HALF MEASURES Show me a sign, show me a sign, please  They’re all around you You just don’t like what you see Half measures, half measures, half measures I can’t go, I can’t go faster Like when you wake for no reason In the pitch of night  Look out the window, city sleeping Guess ’bout an hour till light Half measures, half measures, half measures I can’t go, I can’t go faster A string of lights dimly flicker on a lone balcony The air is chilly and heavy And you’re hit by melancholy Half measures, half measures, half measures I can’t go, I can’t go faster What is it about this time of year That feels so much tougher Christmas is in the air But I’ve much less to offer I must be awful Some kind of fever dream Best become one with the bed What’s been lost at the bottom  Is churning up and clouding your head Half measures, half measures, half measures I can’t go, I can’t go faster Pick up the line, pick up the line, please  Or just resign  Shut your eyes, because there’s nothing to see

FIRST LAST WISHES Fastened late days and caveats There’s so much I forgot Turn a cheek to yourself How can you turn a cheek to yourself You saw all the night lights Flew all the red eye flights Turn a cheek to yourself How can you turn a cheek to yourself Galaxy tigers out on the town Camouflage state of mind When the sun lost its charge I’m ready to dine Hoping you’re red green blind Are you with me are you with me Love is risky Fields of naked dandelions No first last wishes float by Just a little terrified Babies just a little terrified The faded spines of books you read From on the skids From A to Zed Just a little terrified Babies just a little terrified Rotten leaves cling to a frozen gate Another winter bares its weight Turn a cheek to yourself How can you turn a cheek to yourself Galaxy tigers out on the town Camouflage state of mind When the sun lost its charge I’m ready to dine Hoping you’re red green blind Are you with me, are you with me Love is risky, are you with me Love is risky

THIS WORLD IS JUST A WORLD Is this the lover you’ve been waiting for The parachute never opened So there’s no what for I know this world is just a world I know this world A final sucking off Down the sinkhole Few connections lost Were your eyes closed Wept the morning dew Mouths, and static muting Mother Nature’s kiss Astonishing and cruel Mountains conspired Split the molecule I know this world is just a world I know this world Rock a baby hush Unfastened fold Rock a baby hush In flocks of gold I see you laughing I feel you dancing And I know this world is just a world I know this world is just a world I know this world I know this world

MUST HAVE MEANT I thought you said meet at dawn And bring your second A twisted muddled morning Trudging in wet boots Can you see my forehead’s cool Here we are taking our ground And it’s time to turn around Two snaps and a hit I stumble at the knee Why do you always challenge me Must’ve meant Must’ve meant something else Can I explain what I meant Give me half a second Timeout, break the tie Let our friends decide Tell us where the fault line lies Before the Earth caves in Where you end and I begin Sometimes we forget I’m down on bended knee Oh, won’t you look at me Must’ve meant some Must’ve meant something else But I try to understand you I try I try to understand you Can you tell me what I’m missing And does it suit me With no conditions Oh won’t you look at me My broken, trusty mirror Sorry must’ve meant something else Must’ve meant something else I try to understand you I try And I’d die to defend you, I’d die Must have meant something else

BEFORE THE CRASHING WAVES Seashell child combing the beach Before the crashing waves All the world just out of reach Before the crashing waves Were they mocking me babe Were they mocking me Soon enough I took my fill Before the crashing waves Dancing madly lying still Before the crashing waves Were they mocking me babe Were they mocking me Looking for asylum Mother confessor lover wife Before the crashing waves The same ones that took your life Before the crashing waves Were they mocking me babe Were they mocking me Looking for asylum Did you know I called your name Before the crashing waves You answered it’s all the same Before the crashing waves Were they mocking me babe Were they mocking me Looking for asylum Now it’s all philosophy Before the crashing waves So far, impossibly Before the crashing waves Are they mocking me babe Are they mocking me Are they mocking me babe Should’ve been a siren

KNOW NOT WHORL A body walks Upon the Earth Versed in languages without words Take a place Make a happy face Dreaming migration Like the birds Oiled rough string through the needle Into your know not whorl Once again, taking dictation Left or right, fielding satellite Is it all chutes and ladders Where you step all that matters Oiled rough string through the needle Into your know not whorl Will I weary of you Or you me Rubbed the ridges off our lucky penny No more heads or tails Only no not sails Just because we have senses Even if I’ve known you all along Lest we speak it all vanishes Just a splash Not much to hang upon Oiled rough string through the needle Into your know not whorl

WE’RE LOSING HER We see ourselves in the reflection of all water Our ancient mother, and our future daughter The cool, forsaken mistress of the seas For years, she fed us on her tears We bathed like newborns ’Lo the stratospheres she took on new forms But our thirst eclipsed her destiny Swallowed by space We aren’t the last Every great love has its past Her incandescent melodies And how she moved on moonless nights Her distant lacquered greens and blues Rippling under the last stars That floated us That spoke to us Slaked are tongues in crystalline brilliance Quicksilver She’s a giver Quicksilver ebbed like laughter Swallowed by space We aren’t the last Every great love has its past

I CAN GIVE YOU THAT I’ve arrived to drop the veil Let the grass grow high as the cattails Shadow of shadows spare the dawn Take it all in before it’s gone It’s hard to trust To take a punch, to be ignored, misunderstood Too many short landings I feel the rush the memory sense The perfect light, the smell of rain And I am here for the taking I can give you that Please take it Pay close attention, soft and rough I’m your redemption, blind man’s bluff Blood on the briars You’ve been bit In the letting you’ll know I’m it I feel the rush the memory sense Some of us smile as if by chance In the expanse where we live it I can give you that Please take it It’s hard to trust, to take a punch, to be ignored To get so close Then find yourself still wanting I feel the rush the memory sense The perfect light, the smell of rain And I’m here for the taking I can give you that Please take it

Changeling 03:43
CHANGELING At night when you’re asleep next to me I wake with a strange feeling It’s not you it’s me It’s not you It’s me I’m a changeling Changing don’t feel a lot like me I’m a changeling I’m a changeling Have I crept out of a volcano Now I’m some hot wax figurine At first I thought it was But it wasn’t a dream I’m a changeling I’m a changeling Changing don’t feel a lot like me I’m a changeling I’m a changeling I’m walking down a sunny street Thinking a thought When I get caught in a whirlwind I’m lying in a shallow lake Of dread and shame How’d I get here again Can’t a girl ever win Now I’m stripping in a phone booth Like I’m Clark Kent But so much more like The Hulk I’m soaking and I’m spent Changeling and this changing Well, I suppose it’s me but we’ll see Don’t be surprised if one day I swim away Just swim away Little mermaid Born to be born to be A changeling Such a strange thing

SAY YOU’RE SORRY I know you didn’t mean to hurt me Things are said or go unsaid Children play they get dirty Without thought we get hot Say you’re sorry So many things boys don’t notice Little boys just don’t know Sleeping with my magnum opus Shoot the shot with your eyes closed Say you’re sorry Don’t deny me This is me out of focus Little boys just don’t know What happens if you just hold this In your hands Little ghost Say you’re sorry Don’t deny me

WHAT THE THUNDER SAID The unexpected, resurrecting you Can your heart detect what’s true An angel in waiting ’been waiting for you Now it is written in the great book You took a bite and more than a look Below the chapel of Eden, we bend From winter’s kiss your wilderness Deep in the throes it grows and grows Winter’s kiss your wilderness Deep in the throes it grows and grows Don’t say a word Ruined somersaulted Bled to the band Drunken echoes, whisper you’re damned Just holed up in Eden And feeding from your hand We levitate this magic bed Repeating what the thunder said Don’t say a word don’t say a word Distant, dry lightning Ignited clouds on the sound Only a matter of time We bring rain to the ground Now it is written In the great book You took a bite and more than a look The hat you mistook flew off in the wind We levitate this magic bed Repeating what the thunder said Don’t say a word

STRAWBERRY MOON If you walk to the bay When the night’s outlasted the day There’s a passage of light That seems to reflect you On the face of the water Where molecules purl Softly, could only be you Strawberry moon Had to give up the drive Left the car by the cliffside For her mantle of light Saying nothing, not touching On the face of the water To abandon and swirl Godly, could only be you Strawberry moon

about

Elysian Fields recorded What The Thunder Said in New York with their French rhythm section (Matthieu Lopez and Olivier Pérez) and longtime creative collaborators Ed Pastorini and Thomas Bartlett. James Yost co-produced, recorded and mixed, bringing forth Oren and Jennifer’s sweeping sonic universes while the experience of lives lived in nearly 30 years together as a band are revealed in the lyrics. In that narrative, scattered with images of nature and the urban landscape, EF asks the big questions, mining the canvas of the world around them for the axioms and affections that help to tell the stories only Elysian Fields can conjure. Sometimes through myth, sometimes through the tragicomic, and always through poetry imbued with searching and longing, EF continues to inhabit and reflect back to us the deepest truths of the human experience.
